LeBron James‘ future with the Lakers appears no closer to being resolved.
According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, there is growing belief around the NBA that James has multiple legitimate options in free agency, with a return to Los Angeles no longer viewed as the only likely outcome.
“I’m not here to report and tell you and prognosticate potential landing spots that I think are actually in play here,” Fischer said, via RealGM. “But there is definitely a lot of belief around the league … that LeBron has so many outcomes on the table here.”
Fischer added that it “might even be more likely than not” that James leaves the Lakers, though he stressed there are still scenarios in which the four-time MVP returns to LA.
All of that follows another quiet week between James and the Lakers. ESPN’s Shams Charania recently reported that the sides have had little communication since briefly checking in after teams were permitted to begin negotiating with their own free agents. According to Charania, LA has yet to make a contract offer.
Meanwhile, Fischer reports that the Lakers are focused on adding a frontcourt partner for Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, making the pursuit of a starting-caliber big man a higher offseason priority than finalizing James’ situation.
James also is not believed to be in any rush to make a decision — with Fischer suggesting his free agency could extend beyond the June 30 opening of the market.
The Warriors have long been viewed as a potential destination if James leaves LA, while the Heat have generated fresh speculation after acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Cavaliers also continue to surface as a possible landing spot, fueled largely by James’ history with the franchise. That said, there have been no credible reports of serious negotiations involving Cleveland.
Or anywhere, for that matter.
